At Capricorn Mohair Socks, we're passionate about quality, comfort — and doing things the right way. That’s why every pair of our socks is proudly knitted right here in the UK.
But our decision to keep production local isn’t just about tradition or craftsmanship — it’s also a conscious choice that benefits the environment.
A Legacy of British Craftsmanship
Our socks are proudly knitted in the UK using traditional four-needle, double-cylinder machines — a method that helps preserve quality craftsmanship and create a superior sock.
These machines help us avoid the need for excessive elastic or lycra, which can make sock tops tight and uncomfortable. Instead, we craft socks that are breathable, comfortable, and designed to last. the need for excessive elastic or lycra, which can make sock tops tight and uncomfortable.
Instead, we craft our Mohair socks that are breathable, comfortable, and designed to last.
1. Fewer Miles, Smaller Footprint
Shipping raw materials or finished goods halfway across the globe adds up.
By producing our socks in the UK, we significantly reduce transport emissions.
Fewer miles travelled means a smaller carbon footprint — plain and simple.
It's a win for the environment and a win for conscious consumers.
2. Supporting British Skills and Industry
Although we source mohair on the open market, not only in the UK but overseas, due to the quantity we require, we knit and dye all our socks in the UK.
This supports and keeps local manufacturing skills alive.
Instead of relying on low-cost overseas factories for production, we invest in UK expertise.
This creates jobs, supports rural communities, and helps preserve an industry with deep roots in British heritage.
3. Quality Control = Less Waste
Local production means we’re closely involved in every step of the knitting process.
We knit in the natural colour (which we call 'cream') and dye socks in complete batches — 240 pairs at a time (or 20 dozen, as is still standard in UK hosiery.
After being dyed in the UK in an ethical manner, they return for pressing and final checks before heading to us in Northumberland for packing by hand.
This attention to detail helps us minimise waste and ensure every sock meets our high standards.
4. Made to Last, Not Fast Fashion
Mohair is one of the most sustainable natural fibres - it’s breathable, insulating, and hard-wearing.
By knitting in smaller batches and focusing on long-lasting durability, we resist the throwaway culture of fast fashion.
Our socks aren’t just cosy - they’re part of a more sustainable way of thinking.
5. Ethical and Transparent
We know exactly who knits our socks and so can you.
From our UK-based knitters, our supply chain is short, traceable, and trustworthy.
No hidden factories. No murky practices. Just honest, responsible British manufacturing.
We’re proud to pay fair wages and support UK legislation that protects workers.
We’ve had countless opportunities to move production overseas and reduce costs but we’ve said no.
Quality, ethics, and community come first at Capricorn Mohair Socks.
6. Giving Back
Instead of discounting during Black Friday, we’ve chosen to donate to homeless charities, because we believe in supporting people less fortunate than ourselves.
We’ve also donated socks to those in need, offering warmth and comfort where it’s needed most.
7. Tested by Experience
Since taking over Capricorn Mohair Socks, I’ve started participating in ultra-events, long-distance walking challenges often over 150 miles.
And yes, I complete every one of them in our socks.
Even under extreme conditions, mohair proves to be a fibre that’s remarkably kind to the feet. It's part of what makes our socks truly exceptional.
Choosing Capricorn means choosing a product with purpose - one that supports UK jobs, reduces environmental impact, and delivers exceptional comfort that lasts.
Thank you for supporting a business built on integrity, heritage, and a genuine love for what we do. We couldn’t do this without you.
To customers both old and new — thank you. I hope you enjoy the Capricorn Mohair Sock experience as much as I have.
