Pack lighter. Walk happier.
One of the last things most people pack before a walking holiday is their socks. And it's usually where the overpacking begins.
We've all stood in front of an open suitcase or rucksack thinking… “It's only socks. I'll throw in another couple of pairs… just in case.”
Before you know it you've packed enough socks for a fortnight, even though you're only walking for five days.
The good news is that you almost certainly don't need as many as you think. In fact, with the right socks and a simple routine each evening, most walkers can comfortably complete a week-long trail with just three pairs.
Your feet stay happy. Your luggage stays lighter. And there's a little more room for that well-earned slice of cake in the café.
Why we all overpack socks
It's understandable. Nobody wants to start a day's walking by pulling on damp socks. Or worse still, spend six hours walking in socks that are rubbing, holding moisture or causing blisters.
So we naturally assume… one day = one fresh pair of socks.
Except that's rarely necessary. Unlike a T-shirt, walking socks are designed to work for long days outdoors. A good pair manages moisture, dries quickly and stays comfortable for repeated use, especially when it's looked after properly. (If you're still weighing up whether quality socks earn their keep, our guide to whether expensive walking socks are actually worth it makes the cost-per-wear case.)
It's not about packing more. It's about packing smarter.
So… how many pairs do you actually need?
| Holiday length | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 2–3 days | 2 pairs | Wear one, wash one. |
| 4–6 days | 3 pairs | One on, one drying, one clean spare. |
| 7–14 days | 3–4 pairs | The same rotation, with an occasional wash day. |
You'll notice something. The number of socks doesn't increase dramatically with the length of the holiday. Instead, it's the rotation that matters.
The simple evening routine
The system couldn't be easier. When you arrive at your accommodation each evening:
Next morning? Yesterday's socks are usually dry and ready for another day on the trail. Repeat. It becomes second nature after the first evening.
Why mohair changes everything
Not all walking socks behave the same. Cotton absorbs moisture and hangs on to it. That means damp feet, damp socks, more friction, more rubbing and more chance of blisters.
Mohair works very differently. Because the fibres naturally wick moisture away from your skin, your feet stay drier for longer. That brings several advantages on a multi-day walk:
It's one of the reasons so many experienced long-distance walkers swear by mohair — and why a single good pair often does the job of two. If you've ever wondered whether you really need liner socks, the answer for most walkers is that one well-made pair is enough.
Less weight. More comfort.
Even if your luggage is being transferred each day, packing less still has its advantages. You spend less time deciding what to wear. Your luggage is easier to organise. There's more room for souvenirs. And if you're carrying everything yourself, every unnecessary item soon starts to feel surprisingly heavy.
Walking holidays are all about simplifying life. Packing should be too.
Which Capricorn Mohair Socks should you choose?
The best sock depends on the type of walking you're doing.
Walking boots
For longer days in traditional walking boots, our Derbyshire Mohair Walking Socks are the natural choice. Their thick loop-pile construction gives substantial cushioning and all-day comfort, from top to toe.
Walking shoes or lightweight boots
For warmer weather and lighter footwear, where breathability matters as much as cushioning, our Skye Summer Sock and Ayrshire Mohair Socks are ideal. Both are lighter and cooler underfoot while keeping mohair's moisture-wicking benefits. (Not sure which weight to pack? Our guide to thick vs thin walking socks in summer will help you decide.)
Evenings at your accommodation
Many experienced walkers also pack one dedicated “evening pair.” There's something wonderfully satisfying about taking off your boots and slipping into a clean, dry pair of socks after a day on the trail. It's a tiny luxury that feels enormous after 15 miles.
What about wet weather?
British weather doesn't always stick to the forecast. If you get caught in heavy rain, simply change into your spare dry pair when you arrive. Wash the wet pair. Dry overnight. Continue the rotation.
One wet day doesn't suddenly mean you need seven pairs of socks.
Planning the walk itself?
If you're still deciding where to go, our sister company Shepherds Walks Holidays arranges guided and self-guided walking holidays across some of the finest trails in the North of England, including Hadrian's Wall Path, the Northumberland Coast Path, St Oswald's Way and St Cuthbert's Way. Accommodation is booked for you, your bags are transferred between stops, and you walk with detailed route notes put together by people who actually walk the trails. It's the easiest way to enjoy a long-distance path — and, of course, the perfect excuse to break in your three favourite pairs of socks.
Frequently asked questions
Can I wear mohair socks for more than one day?
Yes. Provided they're allowed to dry properly between walks, many walkers comfortably rotate two or three pairs throughout a week-long holiday.
Do mohair socks dry quickly?
Yes. Mohair fibres dry much faster than cotton, making them ideal for multi-day walking holidays where washing facilities may be limited.
Should I carry a spare pair during the day?
If you're tackling particularly long distances or expect very wet conditions, carrying one lightweight spare pair in your daypack can be worthwhile. For most summer walking holidays, however, it's rarely necessary.
Should I still pack a pair for the evening?
Absolutely. Many walkers say their favourite pair of socks never sees a walking boot. Keeping one pair purely for relaxing after the day's walk is one of the best little luxuries you can pack.
Pack smarter, walk further
Walking holidays shouldn't be about carrying unnecessary weight. Nor should they involve pulling on damp socks every morning.
Three good pairs of quality walking socks, looked after each evening, will comfortably see most walkers through a week-long trail. It's a lighter pack, a simpler routine and happier feet from the first mile to the last.
Because when your feet are comfortable, you spend less time thinking about your socks… and far more time enjoying the walk.
